| This session presents a community health assessment of poverty in Spokane County (Washington). The assessment uses a cost of basic needs measure that was developed through a broad-based community effort and describes the social and health factors related to poverty. The Spokane Regional Health District repeatedly identifies poverty as a major contributor to health disparities. The poverty assessment is an important vehicle for community mobilization and policy development to eliminate the disparities. | |||
| Learning Objectives: Describe a basic needs measure of poverty and compare it to existing economic measures of poverty. Articulate strategies to use community health assessment to build consensus around controversial community issues. Describe the use of community health assessment for policy development toward a broad-based community goal: the elimination of poverty. Recognize a public health agency's use of health assessment for community mobilization toward the Health People 2010 goal to eliminate health disparities. | |||
