Spokane Regional Health District’s Assessment/Epidemiology Center has explored a number of health issues in the community over the past 8 years through their assessments. Poverty continues to stand out as a key factor in the differences between health outcomes in many areas. In addition, the assessments have demonstrated that poverty is a common thread through all social, health, and access issues. Individuals and families with low incomes, regardless of race, have struggles within our community that compromise their health status and create health disparities between income groups. This poverty assessment has established an infrastructure to monitor the level of poverty in our community. Staff will use this assessment to create awareness in the community around the impact of poverty and work with groups who are in various planning stages, writing grants, and developing programs. Key indicators from this baseline assessment were developed and will be reviewed periodically to determine whether the strategies implemented have improved the health and social status of the identified disenfranchised populations impacting the overall community’s health.
