US EPA's "IAQ Tools for Schools" voluntary protocol for school indoor air quality recommends low-odor cleaning supplies. Studies on asthma triggers have found that strong chemical odors can trigger attacks. In cooperation with professional school facility managers, a voluntary program was developed that consists of a practical guide for parents (who provide community political support), for facility directors (who direct cleaning and maintenance), and for school business officials (who are purchasing agents for public agencies) that includes a checklist for keeping dirt out of buildings and a checklist for the purchase of environmentally preferable cleaning supplies. In addition, copies of MSDS' indicated the potential threat of toxics, and external ratings of products by public agencies were compiled to ease the transition to healthier products.
