The purpose of this presentation is to share the knowledge gained from a survey of the utilization, in practice, of community health assessments in Virgina. The survey focuses intensively on the Richmond metropolitan area and expands to include selected sites across the Commonwealth. Included is a discussion of if, and how, community health assessments are conducted, and the purpose, use, type (geo-political, phenominologic etc), design, and population focus of the work. Included are questions related to the personnel conducting and designing the assessments. The inclusion of public participation by focus groups, key informant interviews and other techniques is examined. Public health departments, public schools and community based health care facilities are the primary targets of this survey. Secondarily, all universities in Virginia which offer a BS degree with a concentration in nursing, and selected schools of nursing offiering an associate degree or diploma in nursing, are queried regarding the practice of teaching community health assessment in their curriculum.
