The health status of American Indians is well below the national average. The same is true for California Indians. A statewide needs assessment was conducted to examine health risks and wellness factors for 13 rural reservation Indian tribes. The prevalence of chronic diseases and conditions will be presented based on this assessment. The relationship of these chronic diseases (including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis) with demographic and anthropometric data will be examined. Recommendations will be made for culturally sensitive prevention and intervention strategies to successfully address these chronic diseases and conditions.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the presentation, the participants will be able to

• List wellness factors and health risks for rural California Indians.
• Report on the incidence of chronic diseases with this population.
• Identify culturally appropriate components of an intervention recommended to combat these chronic diseases and conditions.
