This Headliner Session addresses how the Social Determinants of Mental Health and Mental Illnesses - factors originating from where we grow, live, work, learn and age - impact our overall mental health and well-being. This session supports the reframe of public mental health to integrate how Social Determinants contribute to the onset and course of symptoms. Presenters will underscore how the underlying causes of mental illnesses are not only modifiable precursors to behavioral risk factors, but are also largely responsible for social injustice and mental health inequities. This reframe elevates the role of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and helps us rethink how to effectively design mental health policy, programs, systems, clinical interventions and research. After offering definitions and context, the presenters will highlight one strong study explaining the relationship of 10 social determinants to poor mental health. Drs. Shim and Compton will present strategies for how public health professionals can effectively address the social determinants of mental health in their work. A bibliography of the evidence base for 10 social determinants will be made available. After the session, Drs. Shim and Compton will continue the discussion during the five Mental Health Poster Sessions at the APHA Expo.
Session Objectives: Define the concept of the social determinants of mental health
Evaluate the strongest evidence to support three social determinants of mental health
Discuss two strategies that public health professionals may engage in to improve mental health in their communities by addressing social determinants
