Practicing Health Care in Situations of Violence

This session will address the challenges of practicing health care in volatile environments, especially armed conflict and political violence. It will address the following issues: a) the scope and extent of the problem and limits on our knowledge of it; b) the experience of providing health care in such fraught environments, including in Syria where the most sustained attacks on health services in memory have been launched; c) what we know about the causes and dynamics of such attacks; d ) mechanisms and initiatives to support health workers working in such fraught environments; e) recent initiatives by the UN General Assembly, the World Health Organization and other entities to strengthen norms of protection and provide for accountability for perpetrators of violence against health care.
