Using Health Communication to Address Health Disparities and Reach Vulnerable Populations (organized by HCWG)

This session focuses on health disparities experienced by different ethnic groups and by those with lower levels of health literacy and numeracy. Posters in this session offer a variety of strategies for using health communication to understand and address these disparities. Those who attend this session will learn about the factors underlying these disparities and the approaches that can be used to remedy them.
Session Objectives: Identify messaging strategies for communicating with diverse communities. Describe strategies for effective health communication with individuals with low health literacy and numeracy. Explain how social support can impact health outcomes and how health communication interventions can leverage social networks. Identify barriers to healthcare experienced by diverse communities. Explain the best practices and highlight barriers to effective implementation of guidelines for categorizing race and ethnicity.
