Social media offer exciting new ways for public health professionals and researchers to collect LOTS of data and reach LOTS of people. This panel features five innovative projects that explore these new 'Big Data' approaches to public health. Audience members will learn how data can be collected from social media to understand the knowledge, beliefs and nuanced experiences of those undergoing a health threat, and how social media can be leveraged to improve public health outcomes.
Session Objectives: Describe key Twitter features used to strengthen social communication.
Demonstrate the effective use of Twitter to assess public knowledge, beliefs and experiences related to health threats.
Describe how 'big data' can be used to collect information to inform health communication and promotion messages.
Differentiate between social media and social marketing, particularly related to their benchmarks and target audiences.
Identify key steps and tools in planning a public health social media chat campaign
