Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: The purpose of this Institute is to train participants in the steps critical for the development of a systematic review thereby allowing them to contribute to building the scientific basis of public health, employ best practices in the workplace, and utilize the evidence when creating or evaluating policies, interventions, or clinical trials. Evidence based public health practice requires a deeper understanding of the research that supports the practice. Many are turning to systematic reviews as a means of gaining this understanding. However, those researchers wishing to perform a systematic review need specialized tools and resources in order to ensure that their data collection is rigorously maintained and each step of their methodology is fully documented. The need has been identified through the work of the presenters, both of whom are librarians and both of whom participate in systematic reviews on a regular basis.
Session Objectives: The purpose of this Institute is to enable participants to: 1. Articulate appropriate aims for a systematic review; 2. Identify the steps of the systematic review/meta-analysis search process; 3. Identify key components related to literature searching/study selection of the search methods and results sections.
