Development of Support for Sugared Sweetened Beverage Tax

This session will explore the successes and challenges of the efforts in Illinois to advocate for the Healthy Eating Active Living Act, a proposal to invest in prevention with revenues from a penny per ounce excise tax on sugary drinks.  Participants will learn about the growing movement to address the health harms of sugary drinks, promising practices for engaging in sugary drink reduction initiatives, and effective messaging and communications strategies to advocate for an excise tax on sugary drinks.

Her work focuses primarily on policy, systems, and environmental changes for obesity prevention through coordination of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity. Janna was a Senior Policy Analyst and Schweitzer Program Associate at Health & Medicine Policy Research Group she focused on improving the healthcare system for the city and state’s most vulnerable populations.
