Changing System to Support Breastfeeding: Baby Friendly Hospital Policy Implementation- Part 1

Since the 1960’s, rates of overweight and obese American children have steadily and significantly increased. Preventing children from becoming overweight/obese is the most effective way for parents to significantly reduce the risk of their children developing many life-threatening diseases as adults. We will discuss and explain how breastfeeding and a Baby Friendly designation can decrease childhood obesity.  We will discuss our successful implementation of Baby Friendly policies and procedures in a regional hospital in rural Illinois.  We will focus on the lessons learned and the factors that contributed to our success.
