Asian American & Pacific Islanders Health Disparities Research with the National Institute on Aging

Monday, November 2, 2015 : 10:50 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Carl V. Hill, PhD, MPH, National Institute on Aging, Bethesda, MD

The investigation of population level differences in health status across the lifecourse is a priority for the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and its supported biomedical and behavioral researchers.   The health of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) is an unique case, as this U.S. racial group has been characterized as a predominantly healthy group.  However, there are within group differences that reveal that AAPIs are disproportionately affected by certain diseases and public health issues that are important for biomedical and behavioral researchers to consider.  Health disparities research related to aging is the study of biological, behavioral, sociocultural and environmental factors that are important for understanding population level differences in health status across the lifecourse.  Specific ethnic populations of AAPIs may endure harsh environmental conditions, sparking pathways that include perceptions of hardship, collective responses, coping behaviors and biological processes that damage population health.  The presenters will provide an introduction to the NIA, describe its framework for stimulating health disparities research, and showcase NIA-suppored research that explores health disparities among Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders.
