Utilizing Social Hooks to Increase the Health Consciousness of Black Millennials

Dr. Payton and her research team are working to increase knowledge
of health disparities among Black millennials, three factors can influence the
process: the social presence of young people, internet availability via mobile
platforms, and consciousness of the social and cultural landscape that impact
their decisions to access and consume health information. These three aspects
are important to and for the social interactions among generations within the
Black community. MyHealthImpactNetwork.org began as a space and place to
inform Black millennials about HIV prevention. It has evolved to address health
and health disparity issues that are of importance to the target demographic.
MyHealthImpactNetwork provides an avenue for young people to explain and
share their perspectives on current events and social constructs affecting the
community. In addition, these constructs help to shape health care information
consumption, creation and receptivity.

Learning Objectives:
Discuss the health-tech activism on the social landscape from the millennial perspective on health and HIV. Discuss the role of social media and technology in this landscape. Describe how online awareness that has led to offline engagement.
