Disseminating a Multi-component School-Based Preventive Intervention to Community-Based Service Agencies to Promote Asian American Children's Mental Health

Asian American (ASA) children exhibit more internalizing problems and similar levels of externalizing problems relative to other pan-ethnic groups. Despite the success of numerous interventions for promoting mental health in young children, most evidence-based intervention (EBIs) are not available for ASAs. This paper addresses this gap by adapting and implementing an evidence-supported multi-component population approach of mental health promotion program ParentCorps (PC), to community agencies that serve high proportion of young ASA children. The design of the study is based on the Framework of Dissemination in Health Services Intervention Research (Mentel, Meredith, Schoenbaum, Sherbourne, & Wells, 2008), which includes 3 stages: 1) understanding the fit of EBIs in ASA communities; 2) carrying out program adaptation and implementation, and 3) evaluating program outcomes. This paper presents the 3-stage implementation approach, feasibility findings, and lessons learned from this population approach. Implications for researchers who are considering disseminating and implementing EBIs to ASA or ethnic minority pediatric populations will be discussed.
