Healthcare providers are the target audience for this video. Video content was based on CDC’s evidence-based guidelines and the One & Only Campaign’s Single-dose and Multi-dose Infographic Web page (http://www.oneandonlycampaign.org/single-dose-multi-dose-vial-infographic). The script was developed in collaboration with the Safe Injection Practices Coalition (SIPC). The SIPC is a partnership of healthcare-related organizations, patient advocacy organizations, industry partners, and other public health partners, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The SIPC and One & Only Campaign are made possible by a CDC Foundation partnership with Eli Lilly and Company. Last year some additional funds were also provided to the Campaign by Premier Safety Institute and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc.
CDC has documented numerous outbreaks in which healthcare providers failed to follow safe injection practices, including many in which the providers thought they were taking the right steps. The continued reuse and misuse of syringes and medication vials has resulted in dozens of outbreaks and led to:
- advisories for more than 150,000 patients to seek bloodborne pathogen testing,
- patient illness and death,
- loss of clinical licenses,
- legal charges/malpractice suits, and even criminal charges.
