Gun Control Policy Development and Its Impact on Gun Violence

Gun violence is associated with tremendous loss of lives and injuries worldwide. China, like most of the Asian Countries, has strict laws and regulations to control the ownership and use of guns and firearms to prevent gun violence and the related injuries. This study aims to describe the policy change from 1949 to 2014 related to gun control and gun violence in China, and evaluate the trigger and impact of policy change to the people's health and wellness. In China, the right to private gun ownership is not guaranteed by law now. The major source of data comes from what is released by the government. Data collected include different laws, policies, and reported gun-related crimes and injuries. Time trend analysis is used to depict the policy development and change over time and its associated triggers. The study also explores the impact of the laws and policies on reduction of gun violence and injury in China. Gun control policies experience three stages: from not restricting private gun ownership to stricter gun control regulations and policies. Besides, policy changes are always associated with the occurrence of large scale or serious gun-related crime to prevent possible injury and loss of lives. The evolvement of gun control policy helps to keep the gun violence rate comparatively low in China.
