Quality Improvement in Public Health: Competency Based Evaluation Tool for Teaching Population / Community / Public Health Nursing: A Multi-site Performance Management and Quality Planning Project

It is unclear if faculty teaching population/community/public health nursing are academically prepared to teach this content. It is important to determine if nursing faculty teaching this content are prepared in this specialty. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the multi-site use of a population/community/public health clinical evaluation tool. A multi-site performance management project evaluated the public health nursing competencies in community health nursing education of each domain across educational settings by use of a clinical evaluation tool (CET). The CET is based on the competencies outlined by the Quad Council Practice Competencies for Public Health Nursing (2011). Four colleges participated in the project, representing four types of program options (traditional, accelerated, RN-BSN and MSN clinical nurse leader) with students representing classroom and online platforms. Clinical faculty participated in competency-based training had various clinical expertise and background. Results of a retrospective pre-test/post- test will be described. Application of the CET was also applied to the didactic/classroom portion in one setting. The presentation will address the impact of the quality management project on nursing course development, faculty development, and evaluation with recommendations for continued multi-site collaboration and partnership.
