Medical Home for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) in Mississippi
Objective: To assess estimates of medical home prevalence and compare its components by race for the population of CSHCN in Mississippi.
Methods: Data from the 2009-2010 National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs were analyzed by using descriptive analysis and cross tabulation (n=1,135).
Results: Prevalence of children with special health care needs in Mississippi was 16.4% (18.5% Black vs. 14.5% White). Among these children, 31.9% (15.2% Black vs. 50.2% White) had private insurance, 54% (70% Black vs. 37.9% White) had public insurance and 5.4% (5.8% Black vs. 4.6% White) were uninsured, while 14.3% (18.4% Black vs. 9.9% White) of CSHCN in Mississippi had no usual source for sick care and only relied on ER. Moreover, prevalence of receiving adequate care within medical home in Mississippi was 36.8% (51.6% White vs. 24.4% Black) which is among the lowest in the nation. About 44.2% (55.4% Black vs. 33.2% White) of these children did not receive family-centered care from health providers; 41.1% (51% Black vs. 29.7% White) did not receive help coordinating care when needed, and 17.8% (18.8% Black vs. 15.9% White) had problems getting needed referral.
Conclusion: Initial findings indicate the low prevalence of receiving adequate care and racial disparity in Medical Home in Mississippi which must be addressed by healthcare providers and policymakers.
