Participatory Methods for Entertainment-Education: Analysis of Best Practices

Entertainment-education is a health communication strategy that has been effectively disseminated in countries around the world for over 40 years. As theoretical understanding has developed regarding the underlying mechanisms of this methodology for social and behavior change, so too have evidence and best practices evolved for designing, implementing and evaluating interventions using techniques that reflect the current state of the field. This timely presentation will give a comprehensive overview of participatory best practices specifically used for the development and implementation of entertainment-education interventions with a wide range of health promotion and disease prevention objectives. Implications include programs produced by and with an audience as opposed to for an audience. The ethical implications of utilizing participatory research methods will be discussed, as well as applications in future research, sustainability, and new directions for this exciting and ever-changing field.
