Introduction

Despite multiple studies/articles on the importance of nutrition, many U.S. and international families remain at risk for malnutrition based on food insecurity and poor access. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the perceived impact of community gardening in Central Ohio on self-reported food security and vegetable consumption.

Methods

This study was a multi-method approach (qualitative and quantitative), implementing community-based participatory research. We recruited individuals participating in a community garden program in geographically different areas in Central Ohio to answer a pre- and post-gardening season survey and participate in focus groups. The surveys measured food security and fruit and vegetable consumption. The focus groups addressed 7 open-ended questions about community gardening.

Results

The project is currently in progress. We determined that participants reported increased food security and increased or stable fruit and vegetable consumption after the gardening season. The focus group elicited seven themes: 1) Healthy foods are naturally grown. 2) Our grandparents’ generation was healthier. 3) Social determinants of health influence access to healthy foods. 4) Marketing can negatively influence perceptions of healthy food. 5) Community gardening increases community involvement. 6) We need a comprehensive focus on the food system. 7) Community gardening increases access to healthy foods.

Discussion and Conclusion

Community gardening increases access to healthier foods by increasing participation and community involvement. Participants are more educated about healthy food. Cost, a lack of resources and knowledge contribute to decreased access to healthy foods. We need to focus on the entire food system.
