Agriculture is among the most dangerous jobs in the US. Agricultural workers face significant health and safety risks on the farm everyday. Spanish-speaking immigrant workers, many from non-farm backgrounds, make up a substantial percentage of dairy farm labor. Unfamiliar with the dangers on the farm, they face language barriers and have unmet and unique health and safety training needs. These factors, among others, increase their chances of delaying preventive care of being injured, becoming sick or disabled. Throughout Latin America, the promotor de salud or the community health worker model has proven to be an effective approach to health information delivery. This project investigates the use of the promotor de salud model with culturally appropriate popular education approaches to improve the occupational health and safety of immigrant workers on dairy farms in the US. This poster will provide preliminary findings on attributes that we have found helpful when recruiting and working with Spanish-speaking promotores on rural Wisconsin dairy farms. Challenges encountered during recruitment and follow-up of these promotores will also be discussed.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am a bilingual outreach trainer who trains health and safety promotores on rural Wisconsin dairy farms. I am also a registered nurse with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in Health Administration. I work at the National Farm Medicine Center where I work on several occupational health and safety research projects that focus on improving the health and safety of rural farming communities.
