Promoting Health in All Policies: Institutionalizing Health Impact Assessment at State and Local Levels
Since 2012, the Kansas Health Institute (KHI) has worked to build capacity and demand for HIA at the state and local levels, while contributing to the field nationally. In 2015, after a training by KHI, a Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) staff member/MPH student initiated a capstone project conducting an HIA of a bike share program to both inform decisions around the program and to assess the applicability of HIA for KDHE grantees working on community health policies and programs locally and regionally. KHI was engaged by the student to serve on the capstone committee and provide technical assistance.
This presentation will give the audience an opportunity to hear how the implementation of HIA differs when conducted at the state or local level, as well as strategies for fostering the systematic integration of HIA into state and local decision-making. Finally, this presentation will share some recent success in developing a monitoring and evaluation plan for a partner willing to implement it beyond the HIA’s conclusion.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have worked in public health for four years, including nearly one year at the state level working on federally funded grants that focus on impacting physical activity, nutrition and chronic disease through policy, systems and environmental changes in community and worksite settings. I am nearing completion of a Health Impact Assessment with partners and stakeholders across diverse sectors and assessing how the practice may be integrated at the state and local level.
