Impacting polio vaccination coverage and acute flaccid paralysis through a coalition of NGOs deploying a cadre of 7,000 CHWs
Data: The project tracks progress on key indicators in bi-annual 30 cluster surveys, independent campaign monitoring surveys, and data mined from detailed household vaccination registries maintained by more than 7,000 CHWs.
Major Results: Routine OPV3 coverage in the India target communities increased from 36% in 2010 to 87% in 2012 and 86% in 2014. Routine OPV3 in the other target countries demonstrated positive though less impressive improvements. Independent campaign monitoring data demonstrate coverage greater than 80% in all target areas. Wild polio virus has been interrupted in all target countries with the exception of Nigeria which has not reported a case since August 2014.
Recommendations: The unique contributions of NGOs working with CHWs to support the global polio eradication initiative have demonstrated positive results in target countries. These efforts should be strengthened and expanded to Pakistan which reported 306 of the 358 polio cases in 2014.
