Epidemiology of Obesity and Chronic Diseases in Batik Worker of Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia
Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted in Surakarta, Central Java. Data were collected from 80 batik workers, trough clustered random sampling. Laboratory examination was conducted to evaluate blood sugar and cholesterol level, while obesity measurement and diagnosis of chronic diseases was determined by physician.
Results and Discussion: We found 15% prevalence for obesity by Body Mass Index, 8.8% of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), 33.8% with grade 1 and grade 2 hypertension, and 48.8% for high cholesterol level. Through linear regression, we found that increasing age shown to be a constant significant factors increasing waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and cholesterol level. Waist circumference is associated with cholesterol level, but neither systolic nor diastolic blood pressure (p value respectively 0.18, 0.245, 0.238 with Spearman Correlation). The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and hypertension is higher than adult Indonesian population which is 2.1% for DM, and 9.4% for hypertension (Riskesdas, 2013). The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia is also higher than average population (14.5%).
Conclusion : The prevalence of chronic diseases among Batik Worker in Surakarta region is relatively higher than general Indonesian population. Waist circumference and age are shown to be the risk factors influencing chronic diseases in this population.
