Identification of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) for adults 65 years and older is important to prevent adverse drug events (ADE), falls, delirium, and gastrointestinal bleeding.  The aim of this project proposes an educational intervention, designed for practitioners, that includes knowledge about the 2012 American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Beers Criteria for PIM use in older adults, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) high risk medications, and prescribing alternatives.  Included in this educational intervention is a skill building case study that will increase practitioners’ knowledge and confidence.  The study design will include a pre and post test to measure knowledge of PIMs and prescribing alternatives, confidence level in identifying PIMs using the 2012 AGS Beers Criteria for PIM use in older adults, provider engagement, and patient engagement.  Pre and post test measurement tools include: (a) content evaluation questionnaire, (b) My Confidence Ruler, and (c) process/program evaluation questionnaire.  The data analysis plan includes descriptive statistics and quality thematic analysis.  By increasing practitioners’ knowledge and confidence in identifying PIMs according to the evidence based practice (EBP) assessment tool, the standard of practice of assessing older adult’s PIM will improve which will result in more effective patient outcomes and decreased costs.   Additionally, this project addresses three Institute of Medicine (IOM) dimensions of quality:
