Law is an important tool for today’s public health practitioner, impacting both public health programs and public health outcomes. Many public health improvements we appreciate today—including high childhood immunization rates, improved motor vehicle safety, and safer workplaces—have relied heavily on the implementation and enforcement of laws. In modern public health practice, law plays an increasingly important role in addressing emerging public health threats such as childhood obesity, healthcare-associated infections, and motor vehicle injuries. Not surprisingly, recent needs assessments indicate that public health law is among the top areas in which public health practitioners express a need for competency development, training, and technical assistance. This session features speakers from CDC’s Public Health Law Program, ChangeLab Solutions, the Network for Public Health Law, and the APHA Law Section. It will provide an overview of public health law and present an opportunity for participants to learn about • The role of law in advancing public health goals • Innovative efforts to use law as a public health tool • Law-related resources available to public health practitioners in the field A “listening session” will allow participants to share public health law related trends, needs, and successes.

Session Objectives: Define and characterize public health law. Describe law related resources available to public health practitioners. Access national resources that provide public health law tools, training, and technical assistance.
