Bearing the Burden of Mental Illness in the Prison System: Research Perspectives on Risk Factors, Funding and Services

This session offers national and local insight into one of the difficult 'end games' experienced by people with severe mental illness: the criminal justice system. Presentations lend insight by addressing utilization, risk factors for criminalization, outcomes and service delivery alternatives. This session is designed to be of interest to policy makers, researchers and practitioners.
Session Objectives: Identify how gender and clinical diagnoses differentially affect risk for criminal offending, including arrest and incarceration. Evaluate whether investment on the public mental health system reduces the number of jail inmates. Compare all cause and cause-specific death rates for former prisoners and the general population in Connecticut over more than 30 years.
