Supporting Mental Health and Addressing Mental Illness Experienced by Young Adults: On Campus and in the Community

This session brings research findings and insight into our national concern with the mental health of youth in the community and on-campus. The session begins with research documenting the prevalence of mental health issues on our national campuses. Other speakers will discuss research-based interventions that help youth experiencing unemployment, alcohol& drug use and the trauma of gun violence.
Session Objectives: Discuss the challenges that juvenile drug treatment courts face in working with youth with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders. Describe opportunities to address mental health needs through workforce development programs. Identify factors that are associated with school shooting incidents, specifically in relation to indications of mental illness among the shooters.
