Panel Discussion
Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. This session will provide an overview of the need for increased chronic disease epidemiology capacity to address the high burden of chronic disease. This discussion will also include current efforts to strengthen chronic disease epidemiology capacity through several models using priorities and strategies recommended by CSTE related to the following five domains including workforce development, access to data and data analysis and interpretation, evaluation, dissemination, and outreach/partnership. Addressing the high burden of chronic disease is pertinent to health policy to decrease overall health care cost and health disparities.
Session Objectives: Discuss the results of the 2013 Council of State and Territorial Epidemiology (CSTE) epidemiology enumeration and capacity survey. Discuss the CSTE recommended staffing for state chronic disease epidemiologists. Identify current models used to build applied chronic disease epidemiology capacity. Discuss some lessons learned from chronic disease field epidemiologists.
