Roundtable

This session will feature the director of CDC's Office of the National Prevention Strategy (NPS) and discussion facilitators across four NPS priority areas: healthy eating, mental and emotional well-being, reproductive and sexual health, and preventing drug abuse and excessive alcohol use. The NPS (released June 2011) identifies four Strategic Directions and seven targeted Priorities. At the 2012 APHA conference, an expert panel introduced the NPS and its relevance for community prevention and social work. This special invited session will present progress implementing the NPS at the community level and engage participants in a discussion across select NPS priority areas. The overall goal of this session is to (1) share lessons learned and identify challenges to implementing community prevention initiatives and (2) learn how to utilize NPS as a framework to collaborate across multiple sectors to advance community health improvement activities. After an overview of progress and key current issues to date by the NPS director, attendees will select one of the four priority areas and engage in a guided discussion around implementation issues and technical assistance / resource needs to carry out this work. A facilitator will guide each discussion and assure that the most salient issues from each priority area are discussed. Brief reports from each discussion group will be shared. Comments and key themes from discussions will be shared across the four areas and the NPS leadership will consider how development of additional technical assistance and electronic resources might be useful to practitioners, researchers and communities engaged in this work. Session Objectives: By the end of this special session, participants will be able to: 1) Describe key areas of interest and concern in advancing the goals of an NPS priority area of interest; 2) Identify common facilitators and barriers toward contributing to community prevention / health improvement related to NPS priorities and goals. 3) Inform the NPS Leadership of prioritized needs for technical assistance and resource development geared toward mutual learning among local actors, and to enhance success in carrying out this work.
