In 2005 the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association was scheduled to take place in New Orleans. Doe to the landfall of hurricane Karina the meeting was moved to another location and APHA has not met again in New Orleans until now. This session will examine the new New Orleans and the developments in the public health system in New Orleans in the near decade since Katrina. These developments include the decision to close the safety net facility, Charity Hospital repurposing the Charity Hospital building as a mental health complex.
Session Objectives: Examine the decision to close the safety net facility Charity Hospital as a function of disaster capitalism; and
Examine the intended purpose and outcomes of adapting the Charity Hospital building as a mental health complex.
