Maternal nutrition and nutritional status affect fetal growth, preterm delivery, and infant growth and development. This is especially true for women who are vulnerable, including pregnant adolescents, minority women, women in low and middle-income countries, and women pregnant with twins. The presentation will discuss contributions and collaborations in these areas and how the science, with the ultimate goals of prevention and intervention, has developed in the last quarter century.

Learning Areas:

Epidemiology
Public health biology

Learning Objectives:
Identify how maternal nutrition and nutritional status have been found to play a role in fetal growth and preterm delivery and in subsequent infant growth and development. Describe the development of knowledge in these areas and how it will lead to public health programs for prevention and health care for intervention.
