In 2010, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc. launched its Asthma Prevention and Management Initiative (APMI) in the United States which lasted for four years. Through AKA's partnership with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), a program under the National Institutes of Health and its collaboration with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Alpha Kappa Alpha raised awareness among parents and childhood educators about the treatment of childhood asthma through educational activities, informational forums, health fairs and screenings.
