The size, composition, distribution and skills of the health care workforce will determine the success of health care reform in the United States. Health Education Specialists have not been in the forefront in working with health care and should be considered a valued health care workforce partner. The Health Education Specialist competencies can be applied to health care reform initiatives on the state and community level.  Minnesota has made significant progress toward the Triple Aim of improved health, improved care, and lower costs through dramatic transformations in health care delivery through the collaboration of public health and health care innovations. This presentation will highlight examples of health educators working with these innovations.

Describe two opportunities within the U.S. Affordable Care Act for the health education profession. List a least three ways for health educators to become engaged in state/local public health discussions of re-organizing the provision and delivery of primary health care. Discuss opportunities to apply health educator’s knowledge and skills in health care innovations.
