This presentation applies a personal history of acute cortisone-induced ketoacidosis, resulting in diabetes, and successful diabetes reversal through lifestyle modification to the public health implications for the prevention and reversal of Type II diabetes that is epidemic in the US today.  Particular emphasis will be given to the relevance of this topic for poor and minority populations.

Learning Objectives:
Describe the broad parameters of the current epidemic of Type II diabetes. Describe the elements of a lifestyle modification program that has the potential to reverse Type II diabetes. Describe the public health implications of addressing Type II diabetes as a medical emergency rather than as a chronic disease.
