The purpose of this overview is to provide a contextual framework for the half-day program. Key challenges in effective health policy advocacy that will be further explored by other instructors will be introduced. In particular, the importance of recognizing that sound science and demonstrated subject matter expertise is often not sufficient to effect policy changes will be discussed. Students will also be encouraged to share their concerns about the policymaking process.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: As a past-president of the NJPHA, APHA Executive Board member, and co-founder of the NJ Public Health Institute, I have led and participated in a diverse array of health advocacy campaigns, including providing direct testimony to state legislative committees. I teach the Health Policy Analysis and Advocacy course at JSPH and have authored numerous policy and opinion articles for the general public that appear regularly in the Wall Street Journal and Philadelphia Inquirer.
