Shifting Landscape in School Health Accreditation and Its Implications for Faculty, Practitioners and Students

The National Task Force on Accreditation in Health Education, sponsored by the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), has been tracking changes in accreditation of professional preparation programs for school health educators for more than five years. Recently, it formed a special working group to study the changing philosophies and requirements affecting the future accreditation of professional preparation programs in school health education. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) unified to form the Council on the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). During the transition from NCATE/TEAC to CAEP, educator preparation programs will have to make decisions about options for re-accreditation. Given the magnitude of these changes and timelines, it is vital that health education faculty, administrators, practitioners and students are informed about the changes and prepare for future accreditation activities. This presentation will update the field on the changing landscape in school health education, options for professional preparation programs, and implications for program peer review. Students should also be informed of these changes in the quality assurance system for school health education so that they can make informed decisions on university/program choices and how state requirements may impact their future employement.
