Introduction: Uttar Pradesh the most populated state of India also has the highest unmet need for family planning (24.1%) and low mCPR (37.3%). Female sterilization is most popular method and male sterilizations reduced from 8222 in 2010 to 6612 in 2013. Urban Health Initiative introduced innovative approaches to engage men to accept and use family planning

Intervention: Male focussed worksite outreach activities were designed to reach men at several gathering points in the cities. This included road crossings or “Chourahas”, and tea stalls where rickshaw pullers gather.  Information and one to one counselling with potential male was designed and implemented and transportation to facilities with quality counselling ensured

Method: Service statistics from health facilities was recorded and analysed using trend lines in 11 districts, and further compared with data on male sterilization in other districts.  In addition the percentage contribution of 11 cities was determined in against of total NSV numbers of the state with a total of 75 cities

Results: Total number of new male sterilization acceptors in 11 cities increased by 47% from 2860 in 2010 to 4216 in 2013. In 2013, the total male sterilizations in 11 cities represented 64% of total male sterilization in Uttar Pradesh, a state with 75 districts. 75 districts reported 6612 NSV cases from Jan to Dec 2013 of which 4216 were done in the 11 intervention cities

Conclusion: The results indicate that the systematic outreach and intervention with men and linkages to quality service delivery increased the number and coverage of male sterilization
