Utilizing the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model and Healthy People 2020 in the development of an asthma health promotion program

Asthma is a leading chronic illness among children and youth in the United States, and a leading cause of absenteeism from school.  Higher rates of asthma are especially prevalent among children, women, African Americans, Puerto Ricans, people living in the Northeast United States and people living below the Federal poverty level. Educating today’s youth about the significance of managing asthma may help to improve quality of life and encourage healthier lifestyles.  A health promotion program, established at a local charter school in Philadelphia, PA 19104, is developed utilizing guidelines from Healthy People 2020.  This is a predominantly African American school in a predominantly African American neighborhood.  Most of the students that attend this school live in low-income housing, and are the product of young, non-married family households.  There is a need within this community to develop a health promotion program geared towards asthma.  The need for a thorough community assessment model is essential when developing a health promotion program.  The PRECEDE-PROCEED Model (PPM) is used as the framework and basis for developing this program.  This program is aimed at the parents, teachers, students, coaches, and school administrators within this local charter school.  This program’s implementation and details will be provided through this presentation.
