California’s multi-level mental illness stigma reduction campaign is designed to improve knowledge about mental illness and recovery, change attitudes and promote acceptance, challenge discriminatory practices, reduce public and internal stigma, and ultimately increase help-seeking behaviors. Ten programs are administrated statewide by the California Mental Health Services Authority, which target stigma and discrimination at all levels, across multiple domains, using a variety of evidence-based best practices. Panelist Stephanie Welch will describe specific tools and resources that are available to communities to implement locally in areas such as: Social marketing  strategies  to change public perception of mental illness at all ages (unique campaign strategies for ages 9-13, 14-24, and 25 and older), and to promote mental health across diverse cultural communities; Toolkits to support the integration of mental health and primary healthcare; Online best practices registry of stigma reduction strategies and training and education models. For each program resource, panelists will discuss the evidence base or data that informed the strategy, target audiences, implementation strategies and evidence of reach and impact to date.

Ms. Welch has fifteen years of experience in mental health policy analysis and advocacy, and holds an Master in Social Work from University of Southern California and a BA in Sociology, Law and Society from the University of California, Davis. Most recently, she has served as Associate Director, Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) for the California Mental Health Directors Association.
