Joyce Edmonds, RN, MPH, PhD , William F. Connell School of Nursing, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA
Background and Issues: The Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) is an evidenced based, theory driven model of community healthcare for low-income, first time moms. Registered nurses, in accordance with 18 model elements, provide regular home visits during pregnancy and infancy to improve health outcomes. The NFP is being implemented across the country, in partnership with public health nurses.

Description: Recent (2010-2014) scientific, public policy and cost-benefit data about the NFP was reviewed in the research and gray literature. A state of the science summary was developed based on the findings of this review.

Lessons Learned: The NFP has received renewed attention due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The enduring effects of the program, return on investment, and quality improvements to strengthen the effectiveness of the program are the focus of current research efforts. This includes but is not limited to improvements in the program for households experiencing domestic violence and the effects of nursing compared to paraprofessional delivery of services.

Implications: Public health nurses are the mainstay of the Nurse Family Partnership Project. Nurses delivering the program, those interested in joining the program and/or those seeking the most recently published data about the program will find this “state of the science update” beneficial.
