Biographical Sketch:
Katie Burk is a Community Mobilization Specialist in the Oakland Harm Reduction Coalition office, and in this position she provides technical assistance and support to communities working to establish and/or expand syringe access services. Ms. Burk returned to the Bay Area after two years in Seattle at the University of Washington’s School of Public Health, where she earned her MPH in community public health. During this time, she also worked as a Program Manager for Seattle & King County’s Department of Public Health as a part of its Health Care for the Homeless team. In this position, she conducted an in-depth evaluation of a Seattle-based homeless case management program. She also designed and executed a needs assessment survey on release planning practices for diabetic inmates in the King County jail. Prior to her work in Seattle, Ms. Burk held direct service positions at community-based organizations in San Francisco’s Mission and Tenderloin neighborhoods, focusing on HIV prevention and case management from a harm reduction perspective. She is committed to promoting the health and well-being of drug users, homeless and incarcerated folks, and people living with HIV.
