Global goals, local struggles: Health reform implementation and women's health
Monday, November 4, 2013: 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Oral
This session will illustrate how the local struggles for women-friendly implementation of the Affordable Care Act demonstrate that it is possible to improve access to health care in incremental steps, while at the same time building a movement with a vision in sync with global goals. The presenters are leaders of the Raising Women’s Voices campaign, a national initiative to make sure women’s voices are heard and women’s concerns are addressed as policy makers put the health reform law into action. Raising Women’s Voices is part of the women’s health movement and the movement for reproductive justice, through which it is part of a global network of grassroots activists advocating for policies that support health care as a human right and women’s rights as human rights. Presentations will cover the challenges of reaching low-income and women of color and supporting them to enroll; advocating for women-friendly Marketplaces; building state-based movements in support of Medicaid expansion and using health reform to address health equity.
Session Objectives: Describe top ten things women get through health reform;
Compare how women are being treated in the implementation of health reform to how men are being treated; and
Discuss women's health gains under the Affordable Care Act in comparison to global movements for health care for all.
