Next steps in global environmental health: Needs assessment and shared solutions
Wednesday, November 6, 2013: 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Oral
This session provides a range of information and perspectives on current, major global environmental health threats and intervention approaches. The first presentation provides a case-control study of parasite infection among children in Peru related to access to basic sanitation and services. The second presentation complements the first by taking a regional approach to addressing environmental health threats as developed through the Pan American Health Organization's Environmental Health strategy in the Region of the Americas through collective action and collaborative response to prevent disease. The third presentation shares a qualitative approach to developing and strengthening culturally-appropriate and locally-supported actions to minimize environmental health threats as described through the "Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WaSH) for health" program in Laos. The fourth and final presentation shares the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) new Global Environmental Health (GEH) Program by reviewing the major global environmental health threats, highlighting current research initiatives, describing indicators of health risk and progress towards "upstream" solutions, and examining interventions. Together, these presentations offer a range of perspectives on current environmental health issues and how they might be effectively addressed.
Session Objectives: 1. Describe current global environmental health threats, including specific case studies from Peru and Laos.
2. Examine the effectiveness of various strategies for mitigating environmental health threats, including community-based participatory approaches to threats, the Environmental Health Strategy for the Region of the Americas, and NIEHS’s Global Environmental Health Program.
