Farm to Preschool: A Food Systems Approach to Connecting Good Food to Families

This session will provide an overview of Farm to Preschool approaches to connect local and regional food systems to low-income preschoolers and their families. Example programs from across the country, including local to Massachusetts, will be profiled. Particular emphasis will be placed on presenting evaluation data showing impact of Farm to Preschool programs on fruit and vegetable intake in young children. Participants will engage in discussions on how these approaches can meet widespread adoption to increase access to healthier foods for children, families and staff in early care and education settings.
Session Objectives: 1. Learn strategies to increase access to healthy foods as a means to improve obesity outcomes in preschoolers and their families. 2. Assess methods for sourcing locally produced food for early care and education facilities. 3. Discuss best practices for research and evaluation of Farm to Preschool programs.
