Immigrant, migrant, and transnational perspectives on Asian and/or Pacific Islander health Part II

When immigrants from Asia arrive in the US or another foreign setting, they experience a period of significant re-orientation and adaptation. These dynamic aspects of migration present unique opportunities to understand the social, cultural and behavioral changes that occur as immigrants adjust to their new homes, all of which influence health. This session explores contemporary themes in immigrant and transnational health, including the impact of migration on access to care, cross-country analysis of leveraging family networks to navigate healthcare system, and health and help-seeking behaviors of diverse API populations. This session places emphasis on the diversity of API populations’ migration experiences and on the importance of applying alternative conceptual frameworks to understanding the development of health outcomes among these populations.
Session Objectives: Define strategies for leveraging chosen family networks to support access to health services among overseas Filipina women in six Western European cities. Discuss whether acculturation factors should be included in access to care models in API populations. Identify community and individual level barriers and facilitators to cancer health information seeking among South Asian cancer survivors and their family members/friends. Describe perceptions of postpartum depression and help-seeking among recent Vietnamese American mothers.
