Stemming the tide of chronic diseases through social determinants of health

Monday, November 4, 2013: 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Oral
Social determinants of health play an important role in the causation and management of NCDs. Due attention needs to be paid to the structural and individual level factors within communities and nations that play a critical role in determining who is at risk for NCDs, who gets the disease(s), the impact of these conditions, and how best to prevent and manage these conditions, particularly in resource constrained settings. Theoretical framework will be complemented by practical strategies from the field for effectively addressing this increasing global health problem.
Session Objectives: Discuss the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Identify the implications of NCDs for women and how best to prevent and control these conditions. Explain the linkages of NCDs with social determinants of health. Develop a model for NCD prevention and management in Africa and Latin America. Specify strategies for addressing social determinants of health to reduce the burden and impact of NCDs.
