Health services research: Better cancer management innovations and interventions

Wednesday, November 6, 2013: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Oral
This session will focus on the following cancer-specific topics: 1. Assess the role of patient-centeredness in a healthcare decision with significant quality of life and economic consequences: the choice to treat prostate cancer with active surveillance rather than definitive therapy (surgery or radiation); 2. For patients with low risk localized prostate cancer, evaluate the influence of patients' region of residence and radiation oncologists' practice affiliations with medical schools on the combined use of external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy on patients within 6 months of diagnosis using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results – Medicare linked database and the American Medical Association Physician master file; 3. Evaluate the effectiveness of a bundled payment system in the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, Colorado's Women's Wellness Connection, in terms of whether the system improved timeliness and completeness of care and reduced costs; 4. Assess the impact of beliefs regarding medical uncertainty and sexuality on parent's decisions to delay the timing of HPV vaccination for their children, utilizing a mixed-methods ethnographic approach including in-depth interviews, surveys, and participant observation; 5. Analyze the impact of Healthy u express regarding the goal of expanding access and timeliness-of-care and reducing breast cancer screening disparities in Bexar County, Texas.
Session Objectives: Demonstrate results of financial, managerial, and procedural innovations on cancer survival Discuss social and epidemiological considerations of procedures for cancer prevention and management
