Cultivating Research Capacity with Community Partners: Lessons Learned from Four Clinical Translation Science Centers

Monday, November 4, 2013: 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Oral
This session highlights the work of four of Clinical and Translational Science Centers (CTSCs) and their efforts to engage communities in research through capacity-building training programs. Trainings are designed to equip community partners with the requisite knowledge and skills to actively participate in research partnerships and, in some cases, to train academic investigators who were interested in learning more about community-based participatory research approaches. This session will highlight how developing capacity-building training programs embodies diverse educational approaches and curricular choices that both respond to different community needs as well as navigate the institutional culture of the CTSCs.
Session Objectives: Describe how to make curricular choices that address community needs. Identify the strengths and limitations of different training models.
